When filmmaking is a first language spoken to protect

The One Minutes x An Deò will premiere this series of 24 one-minute films — When filmmaking is a first language spoken to protect, on 3rd May 2025, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at Talla Stafainn in An t-eilean Sgitheanach (Isle of Skye, UK). This short film series is curated by Shen Xin, and joined with UNEMENU — snacks made by Ali Van, two North Skye residents and life partners.

When filmmaking is a first language spoken to protect explores filmmaking as a site for co-creating language through relationships with knowledge. The series is curated from both open call submissions and The One Minutes Collection, which comprises over 18,000 video works. The selected 24 One Minutes were submitted from Argentina, China, France, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Malta, Morocco, Suriname, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The selection showcases a diverse range of perspectives and visions, highlighting the power of filmmaking as a medium for co-creating language to guide us in how we might come to know again.

to lead with one's relations in making

is to honour the aliveness of boundaries

is to express through the difference between seeing and looking

is to return juxtaposition of planes to songs of places

is to align with the ways of water through what it touches

is to celebrate while holding limitations of beauty and time

is to listen and belong to elsewhere and others

is to remain open to colours of light and dreams

is to move with those who are moving

is to write with those who are absent

is to weave patterns of restfulness

is to not fear the interiority of language

that speaks through all that we make with

and guides how we might come to know again
